Five Spice Powder

Five Spice Powder

As the name implies, five spice powder is literally five spices combined in equal ground parts. This combination is the knockout flavor behind some of our most beloved Chinese dishes, and it takes seconds to mix.

If you want to get fancy, toast whole spices before grinding. You can buy this ready-made but try your own batch and adjust the flavors to your liking.

Chinese Five Spice Powder

  • Total Time: 10

Ingredients

  • Cinnamon
  • Fennel seed
  • Star anise
  • Cloves
  • Szechwan peppercorns (you can get by with black peppercorns or ground black pepper, too)

Instructions

  1. If using ground spices, simply measure equal parts of each spice and combine.
  2. For whole spices, heat a small dry pan over medium heat. Once hot, turn heat to medium-low and toast the individual spices, one at a time. Stir constantly for 30-60 seconds, taking care not to burn. Remove from pan and allow to cool, then grind each spice individually. Once ground, measure equal parts of each spice and combine.
  3. Store in an airtight container.
